Tureeda Mikell is a story medicine woman, widely known for her unique blend of science, astronomy, biology, physics and history. Nationally and internationally known for her work, her poems appear in South Africa, England and Sweden as well as throughout the United States. She is a Silver Poet Award winner, Editor's Choice Award winner and has published well over 60 anthologies of her students' poems K-12 with the California Poets in the Schools program. Many of her students (considered at risk, ADD, ADHD labeled) continue to write, perform, publish, and begin their own poetry venues and/ or win writing contest.Selected U. C. Berkeley Summer Fellow in 1996 for the Bay Area Writing Project Masters Program , Tureeda wrote poetry into policy for the public school curriculum. The BAWP program teaches teachers the art of writing, and ways in which to stimulate the pedagogical curriculum within already established classroom programs that benefit adults as well as children
Her most recent publications was Fall 2007 for the BAWPZine, Bay Area Writing Project. Another is Emory University, due in the Spring of 2008, and having been published in Drum Voices Revue 2005 edition she will be published again in their next publication due spring 2008. Her work can also be seen in MoAD Museum of the African Diaspora permanent story collection entitled , May The Circle Be Unbroken. Selected among many poets, the San Francisco Chronicle published Tureeda's work among eight other poets chosen from the statewide program California Poets in the Schools 26 counties . Tureeda continues to share the stage, write, and be published among such noted poets and writers as, Amiri Baraka, Jenny Lim, Sonia Sanchez, Ishmael Reed, and a host of others.
